Markland Beach Cottages

Welcome to Markland Beach

Markland Beach Markland Beach is located at the top of Cape Breton Island, just off the Cabot Trail, on the Atlantic Ocean.  Our 70 acre property, with a sandy ocean beach to the east, pristine lake to the south, and boreal forest to the north, is a choice spot for nature lovers.

Cape Breton Island was named one of the four most beautiful islands in the world by Conde Nast Traveller (Dec/94).  It is located at the northeast tip of Nova Scotia, Canada.  The island is renowned for its outstanding beauty, and friendly, relaxed, and genuine hospitality.  It offers some of the most breathtaking scenery in North America.  The spectacular touring route, the Cabot Trail, contours the large northern peninsula.  Sightings of whales, eagles and moose are common in the highlands, where the Cape Breton Highlands National Park provides tourists with many hiking trails, look-off views and interpretive assistance.

Cape Breton Island

Cape Breton is also rich in culture. The first people on the island were the "Mi'kmaq". In the mid 18th century many french-speaking "Acadians" arrived, fleeing expulsion from their settlements in mainland Nova Scotia. Not long after, Gaelic-speaking Scots, victims of the highland clearances, started landing on Cape Breton's shores. Mi'kmaq, French and Gaelic are still living languages here on the island, each culture maintaining a vibrant life. More recently, at the beginning of this century, the boomtown of Sydney and its neighbouring communities attracted people whose descendants today pride themselves as active members in the Carribean, Irish, Jewish, Polish, Lebanese, Italian and Ukrainian communities making the region the most ethnically diverse one east of Montréal. In the 1970's, Cape Breton experienced yet another incoming wave, this time people from other parts of Canada, the U.S. and even Europe, listening, as Thoreau once said "to the beat of a different drummer".

English is common language of communication all over the island. Many people are bilingual. Culturally, Cape Breton is probably best know for its dynamic and riveting traditional fiddle style, brought to Cape Breton by the Scots during the "golden age of the Scottish fiddle". Artists like the Rankin Family and Ashley MacIssac are selling hit records all across Canada and many tourists travel to Cape Breton every year to attend the many music festivals all over the island. With its physical beauty, cultural vibrance and warm heart, Cape Breton is truly a "gem" in the Atlantic.
